Tinubu's visit follows the killing of over 200 villagers in attacks by herders in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area, and other parts of the state. In recent months, more than 300 residents have lost their lives due to escalating violence in various local governments.
Speaking at the meeting, the Tor Tiv expressed deep concern over the politicization of the crisis. He said, The second apprehension we have is the politicization of the crisis.
Politicians in the state are busy politicizing the crisis, passing blame instead of joining hands to address it. We hear that some politicians even prefer the crisis to worsen so it can justify declaring a state of emergency in Benue State. Your Excellency, this is unfortunate. Any politician who prays for more deaths for such an agenda is against the wishes of the people of Benue State."
He further lamented the suffering of the Benue people, stating, "Benue State has made many sacrifices to keep this country united. Many of our people died during the civil war; we paid the supreme price for Nigeria’s unity. Why should we be treated like this? What you have come to console us for is just one in a series of massacres in this state. What has Benue done to deserve this? We appeal to you to end the genocide in Benue State and insecurity across Nigeria. We know you are capable of doing it, sir.
