Federal Government Declares June 12 Public Holiday for Democracy Day

The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, as a public holiday in commemoration of Democracy Day. The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement issued on Sunday, June 8.

Tunji-Ojo emphasized that the celebration reflects Nigeria’s historic journey in nation-building, where justice, truth, and sustained peace pave the way for a secure future. He congratulated Nigerians on 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance, describing it as a testament to the people’s courage, resilience, and strength.

“Democracy thrives when there is room for continuous improvement,” the minister stated. He reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to upholding democratic values, which include the freedom of citizens to shape Nigeria’s economic, cultural, political, and social systems.

June 12 was officially designated as Democracy Day in honor of the annulled 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest poll. The late Chief M.K.O. Abiola, the presumed winner of that election, was posthumously recognized by the previous administration.
